Photographic Tuition :

  • Daily lectures and individualised instruction at a variety of locations.
  • Learn the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and iso (The camera’s lens always looks both ways).
  • How the relationship between content and abstraction affects communication and expression in your images
  • The elements of composition and their relationship to the elements in Nature.
  • The attributes and qualities of light, both external and internal.
  • Four tools made by Herbert to assist you with seeing photographically: a light cube, red filter, paper frame and A4 sized reflector.

Participants are encouraged to have a basic understanding of their cameras (charging batteries, formatting cards, digital workflow, etc) and the basic photographic process (selecting iso, aperture, shutter speed, focus) to make the most of their time photographing during the safari, rather than trying to understand these basic functions or worse, becoming frustrated with technology. The photographic component of the tuition focusses on aspects like composition / visual communication, application of techniques for expressive and impressive visual communication, night sky photography, etc.

What you need !

  • A sense of curiosity and adventure !
  • A DSLR, mirrorless, bridge or compact camera with manual mode options for focus, aperture, shutter speed and iso, covering the range between wide angle and short telephoto lenses.
  • A tripod large enough to hold your camera stable.
  • A laptop with a basic photo editing program and either built in or external card reader.
  • A solid understanding of your digital workflow – how to download images onto your computer or hard drive, and how to perform basic exposure and contrast control tasks. The focus of the workshop lies on developing your intuitive relationship with nature primarily before you press the shutter, with the resulting image offering you an additional opportunity to enhance or change its initial expression.
  • Postproduction editing offers vastly additional opportunities to the creative expression.
  • No workflow or Lightroom skills will be taught.
  • A journal and pen.

Your facilitator

Herbert, film maker, photographer, coach, spent many hours in remote wilderness, mostly in Southern Africa. His passion for animals and a sense of deep connection with the wilderness inspired his commitment to conservation from a young age.

Herbert’s professional experience includes guiding safaris, stills photography and Creative Nature Facilitation. He’s best known for his appearance as a wildlife cameraman in the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC documentary THE LAST LIONESS, a conservation classic widely acknowledged internationally.

His initial fascination for wildlife has expanded along the years : not only don’t we merely depend on nature for our physical needs and relaxation, but we are an integral part of Nature. He reflects externally to us what we perceive internally. An inward and outward journey awaits….

Where ?

Wild Rivers Game Reserve

Wild Rivers Nature Reserve is a 2.600 ha game reserve within the 12.000 ha Blyde and Olifants Conservancy. The reserve boasts a diverse landscape with rocky outcrops and savanna where plains game roam freely. Although elusive leopard wander in the shade of ancient trees and the river banks are frequented by hippo and crocodiles, there are no other “big five” animals on the reserve. Smaller cat species such as caracal, civet and African wild cat roam freely.

Rukiya Safari Camp is a simple yet beautiful eco-conscious camp built beneath old riverine trees on the pristine banks of the Blyde River. Rukiya boasts an environmentally friendly construction, light canvas for the tents blending in with nature. Bush walks along the river, breakfast stops in the reserve, game drive expeditions into the neighbouring big five Balule game reserve and sundowners are just a few of things to expect.

Pafuri, Northern Kruger

Regarded as the best walking area in the Kruger National Park, this ancestral land of the Makuleke people or Pafuri, is blessed with exceptional biodiversity and scenery. The concession lies in a vast triangle between the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers along South Africa’s north eastern frontier. Since the northern part of Kruger is officially located in the tropics, its landscape is unique. Expect to see majestic baobab trees, palm trees, fever trees with their luminescent green yellowish barks and huge fig trees. A dream for the camera…

Using Pafuri camp site as a base, each day is spent in different parts of the vast area, walking along pathways made over the years by its animal inhabitants. Access to sites of phenomenal scenic and historical value as well as abundant game, and a true feeling of wilderness characterizes these photography & spirituality retreats.

Wildlife

Large herds of elephant, buffalo and other game congregate here, especially when the surrounding bush lies parched before the rains. Predators and scavengers, ranging from the great cats and hyenas to smaller mammals such as servals, genets, civets, caracals find shelter here. The more elusive residents of the area are white rhino, lion and leopard. For the keen birder, this walking trail is a must.
